Sinnabray (Tell Beit Yerach)

The cities and villages that Jesus, his apostles and some women assistants visited are not specified. However, one of the possible sites are located on the south side of the Sea of Galilee.

The photo shows a view towards the south side of the Tell, as seen near the center of the site. The Jordan River starts its southern flow past the Tell (top background in photo), and in ancient times it probably surrounded it from all sides.

The site was first populated during the Calcolithic period (about 40th Century B.C.. It became a mighty city in the Early Bronze period (3150BC-2200BC) when the city was fortified. In ancient Canaan, this was one of the largest cities.

It was destroyed in the Middle Bronze Age (beginning of 2nd Millennium B.C.) and waited more than a Millennium to be rebuilt on a small scale - during the Persian period (5th Century B.C.). It grew again in the Hellenistic period and was called Philoteria, and then changed its name during the Jewish Kingdom to Sinnabray (Sinnabris).

During the great Jewish revolt against the Romans, according to Josephus, the three legions of Titus camped in Sinnabray before capturing the revolting Tiberias (August 67 AD). In later years, the Romans built a fortress and baths on top of the old layers, in the center of the Tell. An aqueduct was built to bring in water to the city and baths, tapped from the Tiberias aqueduct. In Jesus' times this was a big city and had a strategic location on the shore of the lake.

Lk 8:1-4: "And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable"
