Hammat Tiberias

The city was a walled city during biblical times, and peaked during the Roman/Byzantine periods. It was known for its warm health springs (a total of 17 springs, at a temperature of about 60 C (140F) and was a spa center for the great Roman city of Tiberias.

A number of synagogues were unearthed and reconstructed, including one of the most important mosaics: a zodiac with symbols and inscriptions, and two seven-branched menorahs. This is seen here, and is dated to the Byzantine period (5th Century).

An earlier 1st Century synagogue existed in an older layer, maybe from the times of Jesus. There is a high probability that Jesus visited the site while traveling in Galilee.
