Ruins of a Roman/Byzantine
town are located above the north side of the Sea of Galilee
and close to Capernaum. It is referred in the New
Testament as one of the cities condemned by Jesus
since it did not accept him (Matthew 11: 22: " "Then
began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his
mighty works were done, because they repented not:
Woe unto thee, Chorazin! ...").
The buildings are made of
black basalt stones, and a grand synagogue was
restored in the central quarter. This 4th Century A.D.
synagogue was a classic rectangular
structure of Galilee type, made from black basalt stones, and built
on a raised platform. It is one of the earlier
synagogues of Galilee.
This is the view of the south entrance. It was
accessed from the main street by a staircase, and
there were three doors. Part of the decorated top of
the door is seen on the floor.
The doors face the south,
towards Jerusalem. The structure was damaged in
the 4th Century by an earthquake, and
was later restored and
used until the 8th Century A.D.

Mk 9:30: "...The
Son of man is delivered into the hands of
men, and they shall kill him; and after
that he is killed, he shall rise the third
day. But they understood not that saying,
and were afraid to ask him."
Mt 17:22-23:
"...Jesus said unto them, The Son of man
shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
And they shall kill him, and the third day
he shall be raised again. And they were
exceeding sorry".
